THANK YOU!

Hooray! They say a picture is worth a thousand words. In this picture, those words are all about joy, relief, and gratitude!

Leo's first trip in the van was to the orthotist--what a total dream to roll in and out of the van to the appointment. The second trip was out running errands with dad, the type of trip he wouldn't have been able to go on before we had the van. The third trip was to church on Christmas. The fourth was to the airport and into a coffee shop with mom and dad, again the type of trip he would have made in a car seat or simply sat out and stayed home before the van.

Thank you all more than we can ever express!

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH! YOU ARE AMAZING!

You did it!

Dear Team Leo,

YOU DID IT! We passed our goal in just eight weeks to buy Leo True-Frost an adapted van for his wheelchair. Your hard work and generosity will directly impact Leo's quality of life. Having the van means it will be so much easier to get to his steady round of doctors appointments and physical therapy sessions. Importantly, it also means Leo will enjoy the same things all children deserve: dropoffs for playdates, a day at the park, and the freedom to explore.

The van purchase and selection of appropriate adaptive equipment is now in process. Leo should be rolling in his new van very soon.

Team Leo proves that the power of community, hope and love can make anything happen. When we started talking about this idea earlier this year, we thought it might be a stretch to raise $5,000. We have never been so happy to have been wrong!

We want to recognize all Team Leo members by "tagging" you on Facebook and posting a little note to your Facebook page. So, please "friend" Dana Coleman or Julie Johnson so we can do this. (Team Leo was not just a ploy for us to get more Facebook friends).

Also, please let us know if you were at the group run in Cambridge so we can "tag" you in the group photo.

We give a special shout out to Keith Adams of Alemar Cheese who donated proceeds from a day at the farmers' market, and Therese Plaehn who organized a benefit Bocce tournament in Brooklyn. Their hard work pushed us over the top passing the goal in late August. (Sorry we've been so delayed in this celebration. organizer fatigue.)

You all were an amazing part of this effort. Thank you for what you have done for Leo and shown can be done collectively. Run Leo!

Events to Raise the Last $4500 for Leo's Van: Aug. 25 in Minneapolis and Aug. 31 in Brooklyn

This summer, Team Leo has come together to run races, host lemonade stands, bike, host parties, invite friends/families to sponsor us and garner the news crews to cover our extended community to support this 2 year old boy with quadriplegic cerebral palsy. The campaign has been an amazing success!

Of this crazy goal to raise $57,000 to purchase a wheelchair accessible van, we have already raised a whopping $52,500! This past weekend, Sweet Leo test rode in his first wheelchair accessible van and all reports are that it was a dream.

There is on event coming up in NYC and one in Minnesota and would love for you to share notice with any friends you have in those areas.

If you're on Facebook, consider posting one of the messages below to your status to invite friends to:

Come to the Alemar Cheese stand at the Minneapolis Farmers' Market this Thursday on August 25 where profits will be shared with Leo's campaign.

Join New Yorkers in dancing up a storm & playing Bocce in Brooklyn at Union Hall at the end of the month on August 31 (www.unionhallny.com) where the profits of the night will go to Leo.

Tuesday, August 16, 2011

Unbelievable! Less than $6000 to go!

Thank you, thank you, thank you to the members of the Run for Leo! Team. Jim and Leo and I cannot believe that we are so close to making the impossible a reality. None of this would have been possible without you and without Julie, Dana and Patrick's idea and organization.

If you happen to be in Minneapolis on August 25, please stop by the farmer's market at Nicollet Mall between 9 and 10th street and purchase some delicious homemade cheese from the Alemar Cheese Company. Alemar's owner, Keith Adams, is donating all profits of the day to Leo's van fund! For more details, go to: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=260859013941396

We will supplement the list again as we hit the last milestones--please email julietess@gmail.com if your name is missing or misspelled! We are humbled by all of your help in bringing us this far towards Leo's enhanced mobility.

What A Day! Thank you, Team Leo! Just $11,500 Left to Go to Help Leo Buy a Van!

Dear Amazing Run for Leo! Team Members and Supporters of Team Members!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

You made Saturday, Aug. 6, an awesome day for Leo True-Frost! We are thrilled to report that because of your incredible dedication, hard work and love we have raised more than a whopping $45,000! We thought you might also like to know that your efforts were recognized on the Channel 7 News, too!

We have just $11,500 left to raise and we are hoping to do so before Leo starts school on September 8 so he can use his van to get around his new town.

We are so close to giving this boy the adapted van he needs to realize independence and mobility. This is truly going to be a life-changing development for Leo - and each of you are playing an important part in making it happen.

Thank you for joining us in this awesome effort and amazing community.

Julie

Run for Leo! Boston on Saturday, August 6 at 9:30 a.m.

Hi Run for Leo! Runners, Walkers, and Cheerleaders!

Leo is super-excited to meet you at 9:30 a.m. TOMORROW in front of the WaterWorks at Fresh Pond in Cambridge.

For a map of the Fresh Pond area and information about parking, check out: http://www.everytrail.com/guide/fresh-pond-reservation-loop.

Thank you so much for your support! Your efforts so far have already raised over half of the funds for the $57,000 van!

n.b.: from what we glean, parking is limited to Cambridge residents with a sticker. If you don't have a sticker, safest thing to do would be to take the bus or the subway to Alewife and walk to Fresh Pond. Next best thing to do might be to park in T.J. Maxx or Starbucks/Best Western parking area. If anyone else is a local and has good ideas, please add them here.

Pre-July 31 San Francisco Run for Leo! Update

Thank you supporters of Leo! We have raised over $23,000 toward our $57,000 goal! With each day, we are getting a little closer to helping amazing little Leo realize independence.

For those of you who are new to this site, we invite you to surf around and learn more about Leo and how we are working to raise money to get him a van with a wheel chair lift so he can enjoy mobility, independence and get closer to realizing his full potential.

Several of us on the team have dedicated part of our summers to making this dream for Leo become a reality. We’re grateful that you stopped by to learn a little more about our work, how you can help – and most important about Leo.

Run for Leo! End of June Update!

Dear Leo Fans,

The response to Run Leo! has been fabulous! We just passed $14,000 toward the $57,000 wheelchair accessible van for Leo. We have 23 runners/walkers/campaigners chipping away and confident that we're going to blow out this goal.

With your help, we're making a difference for Leo. Thank you for your support if you have given and forwarded on Leo's story. If you haven't, it's easy to give with the Paypal link and even easier to ask a friend to join.

Cheers to the Community of Leo and the power of people coming together!

RUN FOR LEO! JUNE-AUGUST 2011!

Hi Everyone! My name is Julie Johnson and I have been a member of Team Leo since the day Leo was born. The Team gives Leo and his parents a huge amount of moral support, and many of you have given generously in ways that have directly impacted Leo’s life.

Thanks to your support, Leo’s parents have been able to pay for some costly and essential things which most parents never have to think about: the iPad which is Leo’s key to communication, three trips to St Louis to see a top doc who treats and researches about cerebral palsy, Feldenkrais sessions, mounting devices, and music therapy.

The good news is that Leo’s cognitive skills continue developing and he is bright, happy and social. Leo’s future looks increasingly promising and hopeful – especially if he continues getting the right equipment and therapy. I am writing now to tell you about a new way you can be involved with Team Leo. Earlier this year, Leo began learning to use a new wheelchair. Increased mobility will translate into greater independence during moments that so many of us take for granted: an afternoon in the park, going to school, or simply moving around the house. His wheelchair will also make it much easier for Leo’s parents to transport Leo to and from his frequent visits to doctors and therapists (he had more than 170 last year.) Watch this video of Leo trying out the new wheelchair: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EE9KcqpC210

The challenge we face is that the wheelchair weighs 250 lbs. His family desperately needs a van with a wheelchair lift. If they succeed in raising enough money, they hope to buy the Toyota Sienna van with a Braun side entry lift. Together they cost about $57,000 and they are not covered by insurance.

Many of you have made generous donations in the past, but with this letter we are inviting you to become a fundraiser. Join the fun and get some exercise, as we Run for Leo!
Join Leo’s team of runners, walkers and cheerleaders! Share Leo’s story! Engage the support of your friends and family– and have fun and get fit, too.

Participate:
As a participant in the Run for Leo!, you will
• Find sponsors to support you as you Run/Walk/ Or Cheer (including from afar!) in one of two events (I'll be running both races):
o the Sun., July 31 San Francisco Half-Marathon
o the Sat., Aug. 6 Fresh Pond Saturday Series in Boston (Pick your distance – either 2.5 miles or 5 miles)
o Use a letter to help secure sponsors (available at: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wIUELIP_0ycY9hgl1-ymucvjcvWoAtQsoLMPsyVMaBk/edit?hl=en_US)
* Use a worksheet to help find sponsors (available at: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1GUb0nzgS5HTzlercPEr3byD1H-cqNR2gxcOE5auVi6U/edit?hl=en_US)
• Enjoy the benefits of training for an endurance event (e.g., a hot body, lots of endorphins).
• Party hearty at après-race celebration.
• Enlist the help of your team--your community, your friends, your family— to raise money for the van and adaptive equipment Leo needs. And enjoy knowing that you’re directly responsible for helping Leo realize the same thing we all want for our children: an enjoyable and meaningful life.

Donate:
If you are unable to run or raise funds, but you still want to help make Leo’s adapted van a reality: sponsor somebody who is running, (write to me if you want to be paired with a runner to support,) or make a direct donation using PayPal here at Leo’s Blogspot (see upper left-hand corner)

Spread the word:
If you are not in a position to run or to send a gift— no worries! Please know that your love and support are gift enough. Also, please feel free to forward this letter to anyone with whom you have shared Leo's wonderful story.

As of Saturday, June 11, we have eight members of Run For Leo! with a goal of 42 more! The first person I invited to join Run for Leo!, is Dana Callahan, a childhood friend of mine who lives in Richmond, Virginia. She only met Leo once, but she was moved by Leo’s story. She identifies personally, as a parent of young children and with the shared responsibility to nurture all children. She has joined and spearheaded much of this effort, volunteering to entertain members with updates and bulletins. She has a great sense of humor and makes all things fun.

We hope you too can join us! Tap into the power of your community. You can personalize the attached letter and our worksheet below. Then share it with family and friends. Or Copy the worksheet and distribute it to friends who know Leo’s story. Anyone can be a Leo Hero and Leo can’t have too many. If we can find 50 people to complete the worksheet, together we will make a difference.

Let us know by June 21 if you can join us (see my email address below)!

Thank you for your consideration and all of the wonderful support you give Leo!
